Hankumdo (한검도) – The Art of the Korean Sword

Officially introduced in 1996, Hankumdo is a Korean sword art uniquely based on the shapes of the Korean alphabet (Han’gul). This system allows practitioners to learn and execute techniques by following the strokes of Korean characters, making it both a martial discipline and a cultural expression.

Hankumdo techniques are categorized into two primary forms: striking techniques and defensive techniques. The foundation of the art is built upon five basic striking movements, which can be combined to form all 24 characters of the Korean alphabet:

  1. Horizontal Block
  2. Horizontal Strike
  3. Diagonal Strike
  4. Vertical Strike
  5. Forward Cut

By mastering these fundamental movements, practitioners can develop fluid and effective swordsmanship. Those already familiar with the Korean writing system may find it easier to grasp the basics of Hankumdo, as the strokes of the letters serve as a natural guide for technique execution.
